Dendrobiums are one of the most rewarding orchids to grow, producing masses of flowers when given the right balance of light, airflow, water and patience. Many Australian native varieties thrive outdoors and become tougher and more impressive with age.

 

Light

Dendrobiums love bright light and perform best with plenty of filtered sun. 

Healthy plants should have:

  • Firm upright growth
  • Strong roots
  • Slightly olive or light green foliage

Watering

Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to approach dryness before watering again. Avoid constantly wet conditions.

Seasonal watering guide:

  • Spring & summer: water more frequently during active growth
  • Autumn: Gradually reduce watering
  • Winter: Water sparingly, especially during colder periods 

As a general rule- dendrobiums prefer to dry slightly between drinks rather than sit wet

Airflow

Good airflow is essential. Fresh moving air helps prevent rot, fungal issues and stagnant conditions around the roots and foliage.

If growing in a shade house or enclosed area, ensure plant are not overcrowded.

Fertilising

Feed regularly during the active growth for the best flowering and stronger canes.

We recommend:

  • Balanced orchid fertiliser during spring and summer
  • Reduced feeding through winter

Light, consistent feeding often produces better results than heavy occasional applications

Potting & Media

Dendrobiums prefer free-draining orchid media that allows oxygen around the roots

Common growing media includes:

  • Premium orchid bark
  • Perlite
  • Charcoal
  • Rock or expanded clay blends

Repot when:

  • Media begins breaking down
  • Roots outgrow the pot
  • The plant becomes unstable

Flowering

Many dendrobiums flower seasonally after cooler nights and reduced winter watering. Mature plants can produce spectacular flowering displays once established.

Flower spikes may appear after:

  • Cool autumn/winter nights
  • Increased light
  • Consistent seasonal care

Growing Philosophy

Orchids reward consistency over perfection. Strong roots, good light, airflow and patience will usually outperform constant adjusting or over-care.
